Think of AI as Your Smartest Intern

Imagine it's Monday morning and a new employee joins your team.

• They graduated top of their class.
• They've read millions of books.
• They can write code, marketing copy, business cases, meeting summaries and product documentation.

Sounds amazing, but then you walk over and say: 

"Can you do something about marketing?"

They smile politely.

"...What kind of marketing?"

You reply:

"Just...marketing."

An hour later you're disappointed.

"The intern isn't that smart."

But was the problem really the intern?

One of the biggest misconceptions about AI is that people treat it like a search engine. Type a few words. Expect the perfect answer. But AI doesn't retrieve information the way a search engine does. It collaborates.

The quality of its output depends on the quality of the thinking that goes into the conversation. That's why vague prompts produce vague answers, while specific goals, clear context and concrete constraints lead to dramatically better results.

In other words: Better thinking → Better prompts → Better outcomes.

Imagine asking a colleague to prepare a presentation. You probably wouldn't say:

"Make me a presentation."

You'd explain:

• Who the audience is
• What decision needs to be made
• How much time you have
• What success looks like

AI works exactly the same way. The more context you provide (your audience, goals, constraints, preferred format) the better the collaboration becomes.

Another mistake? People start a new conversation every time they don't like the response. Imagine doing that with a colleague. Instead of saying "Can you simplify section two?" or "Make this more persuasive", you'd fire them and hire someone new every five minutes. That would be ridiculous. Yet that's exactly how many people use AI.

The real value comes from iteration. Ask it to improve, shorten, expand, critique or rewrite. Think of the first response as Version 1, not the finished product.

Most people use AI to create, fewer use it to challenge their ideas. That might be its greatest strength.

Try asking questions like:

• What's weak about this argument?
• What assumptions am I making?
• How would someone disagree?
• Rate this proposal from 1 to 10, and explain why.

Instead of replacing your thinking, AI stretches it.

That's why we often describe it as a Thinking Buddy, not a writing tool.

Ironically, one of the most valuable AI skills is knowing when not to use it.

If the task takes ten seconds, just do it yourself. If accuracy is critical (legal advice, financial figures, compliance or health information) verify everything before acting on it. AI can sound convincing while still being wrong.

Good AI users aren't the people who use AI for everything. They're the people who know when it adds value.

Eventually you'll notice something: certain prompts work exceptionally well. Don't rewrite them every week, save them. Turn them into templates and build your own AI playbook.

That's where productivity really starts to scale.

The people getting the most value from AI aren't necessarily better writers. They're better communicators. They define goals, provide context, ask better questions, challenge assumptions, and iterate instead of restarting.

In short, they do what great leaders have always done. AI simply makes the quality of that thinking visible.
